VIRGIL MWATOTELE

from £18.00

#ARTIST217 | NAMIBIAN

Virgil Mwatotele is a 2D Animator, Motion Designer, and Illustrator based in Windhoek, Namibia, whose work draws strongly from Namibian and wider African visual culture. His practice blends character, movement, and illustration to create expressive, culturally rooted narratives that feel both contemporary and deeply personal.

Working across illustration and animation, Virgil embraces a raw, unpolished aesthetic influenced by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat. Loose line work, exaggerated forms, and bold colour choices give his characters a sense of immediacy and emotion, while recurring motifs reflect everyday life, identity, and cultural memory. Imperfection plays a central role in his process, allowing honesty, energy, and individuality to come through in each piece.

Through Project 195, Virgil contributes a distinctive creative voice from Namibia, expanding representation from Southern Africa within the global archive. His work reinforces the project’s focus on authentic self-expression and culturally grounded storytelling, highlighting how local identity can translate into powerful universal narratives.
