Tsion Assefa is a visual artist and illustrator from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, whose practice sits between storytelling, observation, and emotional nuance. With an academic background in architecture, Tsion’s creative journey moved through graphic design before evolving into digital painting and, more recently, traditional media. That architectural foundation continues to inform her work through a strong sense of composition, structure, and spatial awareness.
Her illustrations often balance softness with intensity, pairing expressive characters and quiet moments with layered colour, texture, and movement. Working across children’s books, comics, and standalone artworks, Tsion explores themes of perspective, memory, and inner worlds. She is also the co-creator of the webcomic Threads, developed alongside her brother Ermias Assefa, which examines truth and subjectivity through interconnected narratives.
Tsion’s work has been featured twice by Etan Comics in the anthologies Long Distance and Carry On, and Before the Sixth marked her debut solo exhibition, bringing together both her digital and traditional pieces. Today, she continues to develop a practice rooted in storytelling and visual honesty, creating work that feels intimate, reflective, and quietly powerful.
