Saidi Alifa is an illustrator from Blantyre, in Malawi’s Southern Region, whose work is driven by storytelling and a lifelong connection to drawing. Self-taught, he began exploring digital illustration in 2010 after discovering Photoshop, gradually developing his skills while studying and later working as a civil engineer.
After several years in the engineering field, Saidi made the decision in 2019 to step away from that career and pursue art full-time. His practice gained momentum in 2020 with the illustration of Racism Stops With Me, a project that reignited his passion for narrative-driven work and reaffirmed his commitment to visual storytelling as both craft and purpose.
Today, Saidi focuses primarily on illustration for picture books, drawn to the unique ability of words and images to spark imagination and emotion. Whether working on children’s stories or other narrative-led projects, his work reflects a belief that art is an ongoing journey of learning, expression, and meaning. Through Project 195, he brings a storytelling voice from Malawi that centres imagination, care, and the power of visual narrative.
