Julie Fournier, known creatively as Bellule, is a French contemporary painter born into a family of artists, a painter mother and a musician father, and raised in a world where creativity was everywhere. After beginning in visual communication, her need for direct contact with materials led her to the École des Beaux-Arts d'Angers, graduating in 2011, before she spent three years in the studio of a hyperrealist painter and then set out on her own, developing a deeply personal style.
Bellule's work moves between expressionist figuration and lyrical abstraction, fusing raw emotional intensity with real freedom of interpretation. Drawing on nature and her own feelings, she explores universal themes, the human, the natural, the ephemeral, with the portrait at the heart of her practice, capturing the duality of strength and fragility through layered acrylic, spray paint and texture, light and contrast. Influenced by masters from Munch and Van Gogh to Kandinsky, and by contemporaries such as Jenny Saville and Yan Pei-Ming, she paints, in her own words, to "give form to the intangible" and awaken a deep inner resonance in the viewer. Since 2024 she has united her two art forms, staging pop-up galleries at summer festivals where she also performs with her band, and her work has been exhibited across France, Monaco, Berlin, Madrid and Milan, and honoured with awards including the 2023 Leonardo da Vinci International Art Prize.
